Neutrophils mediate the influence of catecholamines on inflammation

Excessive or dysregulated neutrophil activation can lead to uncontrolled inflammation and tissue damage and thus contribute to the pathogenesis of acute and chronic inflammatory diseases, Understanding the regulation of neutrophil activation and recruitment is therefore of paramount importance. There is accumulating evidence that neurotransmitters like catecholamines act as immunomodulators to control inflammation. In this project, we therefore aim to decipher the catecholamine-neutrophil axis, investigating de novo synthesis of catecholamines as well as their degradation and transport by neutrophils, and evaluating the influence of these interactions on chronic and acute cardiovascular and thrombotic diseases.
